看重故事的恐龙大片
当得知迈克尔·克莱顿准备创作《侏罗纪公园》续集并将其定名为“失落的世界”时，史蒂文·斯皮尔伯格顿时喜出望外，他说：“我是阿瑟·柯南道尔所著经典小说《失落的世界》的狂热粉丝，书中进入史前世界的新奇想法让我深深着迷，因为那是存在于现今的史前世界，不是围栏中的景观，也不是主题公园，而是一个毫无人类发明的世界。对我而言，如果没有一个精彩纷呈的好故事，那么《侏罗纪公园》只能成为一段美好的回忆。”
在暂别导桶的三年中，斯皮尔伯格一直在谨慎挑选他的下部作品，而克莱顿对恐龙故事的再度关注无疑帮他下定了决心。因为《侏罗纪公园》曾以9亿1600万美元打破全球票房纪录，所以环球影业很快开始与斯皮尔伯格的安布林电影公司讨论起商业前景可观的续集，最终，两家公司决定联手将《失落的世界》搬上大银幕。
自从影以来，斯皮尔伯格始终不曾遗忘自己的观影经历，童年随父亲观看的《大马戏团》让他对电影的魅力惊讶不已，不久之后，他开始尝试与亲友拍摄电影。“观众才是最重要的，”斯皮尔伯格说，“在构思《侏罗纪公园》、《失落的世界》乃至印第安纳·琼斯系列电影时，我确实想到了观众，我希望这部影片能带给观众纯粹的乐趣。”在此创作思想的指引下，本片看上去既似曾相识又与众不同，在令人叹为观止的影像奇观中，影片将想像和科技推向了极限。
1993年的《侏罗纪公园》以精湛的CGI技术与先进的机械及电子模型的完美融合开启了视觉特效的新纪元，而时隔多年之后，早已对电脑特效司空见惯的观众想看到的不仅仅是活生生的恐龙。“这部续集的出发点应该是故事而并非技术，”斯皮尔伯格说，“自从《侏罗纪公园》问世以来，CGI技术得到了长足发展，所以我们有机会在大银幕上呈现出更真切的恐龙，可促使我拍摄本片的却是故事。”克莱顿补充道：“《侏罗纪公园》提出了人类设法控制大自然的问题，可从自认为有能力驾驭大自然的那一刻起，你便会深陷险境，因为你根本无能为力。你能造一艘船，却不能造海，你能造一架飞机，却不能制出空气，无所不能的你只不过是梦境中的幻象。”本片故事不但延续了首部中人与自然的博弈之争，还进一步探讨了克隆技术的道德问题。巧合的是，在影片后期制作阶段，世界上第一只克隆羊在英国诞生。
规模壮观的拍摄
就剧情片或喜剧片而言，影片的前期准备工作通常只需4个月时间，而本片这种场面壮观的科幻冒险片则至少需要18个月。1995年春，《失落的世界》的幕后班底开始集结，就在克莱顿为小说收尾和斯皮尔伯格与编剧大卫·凯普酝酿影片剧本的同时，制作人科林·威尔逊开始全力关注本片所要应用的视觉特效技术，工业光魔的丹尼斯·穆伦、斯坦·温斯顿和迈克尔·兰特瑞全都热切的希望用新兴技术大显身手。从1985年开始与斯皮尔伯格合作的艺术指导瑞克·卡特将小说中的单一场景作为切入点，在充分领会斯皮尔伯格的构想之后，卡特于秋季率领艺术部门全面展开情节串联图板、电脑动画、图解和模型的相关工作，从而为整部影片的拍摄提供蓝本。
科林·威尔逊说：“突飞猛进的液压技术让我们得以用较低预算和此前一半的时间去完成两倍数量的史前生物，但最重要的是让它们在大银幕上的表现超越以往。”温斯顿深知仅用新动作和新技术重复利用《侏罗纪公园》中的恐龙还远远不够，增加恐龙的品种和数量势在必行。他和100多名技师耗时一年半完成了将近40只恐龙，其中包括体型只有家禽大小的秀颚龙和第二代成年暴龙。在此期间，温斯顿与主管机械特效的兰特瑞和主管电脑特效的穆伦密切协作，以充分保证各效果衔接得天衣无缝。因为之前曾作过演员、化妆师和导演，所以温斯顿更愿意将片中的机器恐龙当作有血有肉的演员，并赋予其个性和表情。在片场上，他与斯皮尔伯格并肩合作，通过耳麦指导恐龙的一举一动。
为了提升片中恐龙的可信度，斯皮尔伯格再次请来落基山博物馆的考古学家杰克·霍纳任本片技术顾问。作为世界最著名的化石收藏家，霍纳可以通过恐龙的骨骼化石进行推测，从而确定恐龙的外形和行为习惯，斯皮尔伯格和温斯顿在《失落的世界》中充分应用了这位权威专家的研究成果。
在最终选定加州尤里卡附近的红杉林之前，艺术指导卡特的足迹曾遍及加勒比海、中美洲以及新西兰，他希望找到一片被时间和人类遗忘的失落之地，而距旧金山6小时车程的红杉林堪称理想之选。值得一提的是，有着将近2000万年历史的红杉林正位于加州的“失落海滩”，恰好与本片片名不谋而合，而且林中保留着恐龙生存时期独特而优美的植物遗迹。
1996年6月，建筑协调人约翰·维拉里诺（John Villarino）在环球制片厂的12号摄影棚拉开了布景工程的序幕，12号摄影棚是世界第二大摄影棚，而本片全部布景将占据环球制片厂中6个最大的摄影棚。通过艺术部门的模型和图纸，维拉里诺及其手下的120名能工巧匠必须搭建出100个布景，可在有限的空间内同时完成全部布景是不可能的，维拉里诺于是想到一棚多用，即在同一个摄影棚中先后打造出多个不同布景，以供剧组轮流拍摄。
