安东尼奥尼《现代爱情三部曲》之首，他开始探讨现代人在物质文明的高速发展下，情感和精神上却发生危机和隔阂的主题。影片上映时受到很多责难，因为没有按常理交代失踪者的下落，却在桑德罗和克劳迪娅身上大做文章，但这也是本片的最大特色。安东尼奥尼不是要营造一个侦破悬念故事，而主要在于细腻呈现中产阶级对于情欲和道德的迷惘选择和不安定性，人物心理描写尤为出色，镜头运用更是一绝，多处表现中产阶级的众生相和空镜头的适当配合，都显示出导演的功力。片中的孤岛象征着角色的孤独和情感上的冷漠贫瘠，是影史的经典段落。不过影片略显冗长，格调明显走文艺小资路线，不易为大众接纳。女主角维蒂的演出冷艳敏感，是现代主义电影的代表女星，从本片开始她成为安东尼奥尼的御用女代言人。影片获得戛纳影展评审团大奖，是安东尼奥尼的奠基之作。
