阿基姆（艾迪·墨菲 Eddie Murphy 饰）是扎门达国的王子，他和侍从桑米（阿瑟尼奥·豪尔 Arsenio Hall 饰）来到美国，要在这里进行为期40天的微服访问。对于阿基姆来说，此行还有另外一个目的，他对父亲甲斐（詹姆斯·厄尔·琼斯 James Earl Jones 饰）为自己安排的婚事很是不满，所以阿基姆决定，一定要在美国找到自己的真命天女。

继《颠倒乾坤》之后，美国著名黑人影星埃迪·墨菲和著名导演约翰·兰迪斯再度联手合作了这部“被搬到当代30年代的浪漫喜剧片”，活泼生动和迂回曲折的情节中穿插着插科打诨的滑稽场面，奇特的对话和即兴创作为影片增加了生气。影片的处理方式十分罕见：不仅将黑人置于核心的地位，由黑人扮演重要的角色，且没有将黑人表现为肮脏的穷人。此前并未接触喜剧题材的埃迪·墨菲在表现出了无与伦比的喜剧天才和感召力，为其演艺生涯打开了一个新的领域。可同埃迪·墨菲相媲美的是两位男演员詹姆斯·厄尔·琼斯和阿塞尼奥·霍尔，演技都很出色。在第61届奥斯卡上，此片获最佳服装设计和最佳化装奖的提名。
