关于影片本片堪称黑色电影的经典代表作品。影片改编自侦探小说大师汉密特的同名小说，将神秘的美女、难解的怪人和这桩谋杀案连在一起，需要主角抽丝剥茧，解开那一层层谜团。影片节奏紧凑，对白机智，细节精致，表演无懈可击。这是休斯顿首次执导筒。此片也是亨弗莱·鲍嘉的成名作，他以片中的私家侦探角色山姆·斯佩德成为好莱坞的首席硬汉。这个故事于1931年曾搬上银幕，1936年以《魔鬼遭遇女郎》（Satan Met a Lday）的片名再度拍摄，由贝蒂·戴维斯主演，但成就均不如1941版。汉密特的《马耳他之鹰》则是一部最佳的“硬派侦探小说”。本书首次出版于1930年，是哈米特的第三部长篇小说，在美国兰登书屋“现代文库”评选的“20世纪100部最佳英文小说”中列第56位。 黑色电影“黑色电影”是法国影评家尼诺·法兰克在1946年因受黑色小说一词的启发而创造出来的用语。主要指好菜坞在四十年代和五十年代初期拍摄的以城市中的昏暗街巷为背景、反映犯罪和堕落的世界的影片。黑色影片不是一种独立的影片类型。它是同许多传统的影片类型，如强盗片、西部片、喜剧片等交织在一起的。虽然它的题材是以犯罪活动为主．但并非所有的犯罪题材的影片都可以归为黑色影片。 视觉上，黑色电影往往具有比较明显的特征：夜景中阴暗的城市、极端角度的摄影构图、高反差照明、低调布光、令人窒闷的大雨等；主题上，黑色电影多以一种比一般警匪电影更加悲观、更加暴力的方式，来展现城市生活中的犯罪活动。黑色影片在四十年代进入兴旺时期，代表作品有：约翰·休斯顿的《马耳他之鹰》(1941)，比利·怀尔德的《火车谋杀案》(1943)，霍华德·霍克斯的《沉睡》(1946)，戴·加涅特的《荡妇怨》(1946)，奥逊·威尔斯的《陌生人》(1946)和《上海来的女人》(1949)等。 黑色影片有时也指第二次世界大战期间某些调子低沉、逃避现实的法国影片，这些影片的创作者不愿意维希政府的政治要求，故意避免接触现实生活。此外，战后一代的法国导演曾一度对好菜坞的黑色影片发生强烈兴趣，例如让·比埃尔·梅尔维尔在六十年代力图恢复黑色影片的艺术声誉，拍摄了一系列具有黑色影片基本特征的影片，如《痛苦》(1962)、《第二次呼吸》（1966)和《日本武士》(1967)等。
