◎幕后揭秘
《动物屋》是国家讽刺文社（National Lampoon）拍摄的第一部电影，作为70年代中期在美国大学校园最受欢迎的幽默杂志，国家讽刺文社以对政治和流行文化的辛辣讽刺而著称。因为杂志撰稿人多为刚刚走出校园的大学毕业生，所以深得全美学子的青睐。在制作完成大卫·柯南伯格的电影处女作《毛骨悚然》之后，制作人伊万·雷特曼找到杂志出版商马迪·西蒙斯（Matty Simmons）提议拍摄由讽刺文社冠名的电影，作为讽刺文社舞台剧的幕后推手，雷特曼希望用电影来演绎戏剧中的精彩段落。
身为本片编剧之一的道格拉斯·肯尼曾任国家讽刺文社的首席总编，他毕业于哈佛大学，曾掌管精英学生组织。在西蒙斯的建议下，肯尼与杂志作者哈罗德·雷米斯会面，共同酝酿故事大纲。肯尼非常欣赏雷米斯笔下的兄弟会故事，提议将其作为影片蓝本。经过肯尼、雷米斯和克里斯·米勒三位编剧的集思广益，影片故事的发生时间被锁定在1962年，因为他们一致认为1962年是美国纯真年代的最后一年，而片尾的游行恰好发生在肯尼迪遇刺的前一天。
雷特曼和西蒙斯带着110页的大纲初稿奔波于好莱坞片商之间，虽然环球影业很喜欢讽刺文社的幽默风格，却并不看好影片构思。雷米斯回忆说：“我认为我们的作品超出了制片方的预期，很多场景的作呕指数已经登峰造极，可我们依然毫不退缩。”随着剧本第九稿的逐渐成形，环球影业开始接受本片。最终，影片主创得到了300万美元的拍摄经费，西蒙斯回忆说：“制片方说这不过是一部愚蠢的小电影，如果幸运或许能小赚一笔，就让他们去为所欲为吧。”
雷特曼起初本想亲自执导本片，怎奈他只执导过拍摄成本仅为5000美元的《食人女》，导演经验严重不足。在敲定约翰·兰迪斯之前，制片方曾与理查德·莱斯特和鲍伯·拉菲尔森接洽。虽然兰迪斯认为影片剧本是他当时看过最有趣的作品，可还是与编剧产生了摩擦，因为兰迪斯早在中学便辍学，而三位编剧都是来自东海岸的大学毕业生。雷米斯说：“他认为《动物屋》是他的电影，而我们已经为此耗费了两年时间，我们痛恨他将影片据为己有。”
当演员就位之后，影片主创面临着颇为棘手的难题，那就是很多大学都将本片剧组拒之门外。俄勒冈大学校长威廉·比蒂·博伊德（William Beaty Boyd）曾任加州大学高管，当时《毕业生》剧组希望在加大拍摄，博伊德的同事都认为该片缺乏艺术价值，于是予以回绝，后来《毕业生》成为了影史经典。当《动物屋》制片方提出想在俄勒冈大学取景拍摄时，不愿再犯同样错误的博伊德不但立即欣然应允，而且还主动交出自己的办公室供剧组使用。
