◎幕后揭秘
为了向赛尔乔·莱翁的意大利西部片致敬，西蒙·摩尔在1992年末完成了本片剧本大纲，他认为故事主人公应该是一名女子：“当你将女性带入这个世界，会立即发现有趣的情节动力。”片中大反派Herod和名为“Redemption”的小镇都在有意暗指圣经，而且摩尔起初希望将《致命的快感》拍成一部独立电影，由他亲自执导，在西班牙或意大利拍摄，预算仅有3、400万美元。1993年5月，索尼电影公司买下了摩尔的剧本，并在两个月后敲定由莎朗·斯通领衔主演。因为斯通还兼任联合制作人，所以她有权选择影片导演，山姆·雷米执导的《鬼玩人3：魔界英豪》曾给斯通留下深刻印象，为了让雷米担纲本片导演，斯通甚至不惜以退出相威胁，因为她坚信《致命的快感》会让雷米有机会充分发挥他的技能和创造力。
索尼公司很快开始着手筹拍，并委托摩尔多次重写剧本，最终，摩尔被索尼公司解雇，编剧约翰·塞尔斯取而代之，因为他愿意按照制片方的要求将本片打造成一部老式西部片。由于塞尔斯的剧本拖沓冗长，使得片长将近两个半小时，所以制片方又重新找回摩尔，当时距影片开拍仅有三周。在重写剧本时，摩尔暗中去掉了塞尔斯编写的内容，并得到了索尼公司的认可。
罗素·克劳原本希望扮演其他角色，是莎朗·斯通建议他竞争男主角，斯通回忆说：“当看到1992年的《无发无天》时，我发现罗素·克劳不仅魅力过人、颇具天赋，而且无所畏惧。我相信他有胆量担纲主演。”雷米也对克劳大加赞赏，称其让人想起传说中的美国牛仔。可索尼公司却对斯通的选择充满疑虑，因为当时的克劳在好莱坞还名不见经传。此外，索尼公司认为让出道不久的莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥扮演片中基德太冒风险，无奈之下，斯通决定自掏腰包支付迪卡普里奥的片酬。
