在5000年前的古埃及，俄摩拉城因其城主曼侬（史蒂文·布兰德 Steven Brand 饰）手握重兵，并且统治非常残暴，使其称霸一方。为了反抗他的统治，领地里的其他部落组成联盟向其发动了多场战争。但是结果都是大败而归。原来，在曼侬身边有一位精通巫术 的神秘人物，她能预知未来，遇见部落联盟的战术安排，由此帮助曼侬百战百胜。在知晓这一情况后，部落联盟决定派出一位刺客先把这个神秘人物除掉。但是当刺客摩挲尤斯（道恩·强森 Dwayne Johnson 饰）深入城内准备暗杀那个神秘人物时，却发现这是一位漂亮的女人（胡凯莉 Kelly Hu 饰），而且是因为受到曼侬的威胁才被逼帮助曼侬。最终，他们的目标从这位神秘人物身上转到了直接刺杀曼侬，一场生死大战就此展开……
◎幕后揭秘
WWE巨星巨石扮演的蝎子王最早出现在2001年的《木乃伊2》中，虽然只是一个露面时间不到10分钟的小角色，但巨石的壮硕身躯和精彩的巨蝎特效成了片中吸引眼球的最大亮点。其实早在《木乃伊2》拍摄期间，嗅觉敏锐的环球公司制作人就在片场找到巨石，希望让他主演一部真正属于他自己的电影。“当时我真的很兴奋，”巨石回忆说，“我一直想进军影坛，在苦苦等待良机。这次机遇显然不容错过，我一定不会让他们失望。”
在制片方看来，第一次出现在动作片中的巨石令人眼前一亮，蝎子王的角色非常适合巨石发挥体能天赋，他们见证了动作新星的诞生。环球公司制作主管凯文·米舍说：“巨石在《木乃伊2》片场的第一场戏就把我们都震住了，尽管他用古埃及语道出对白，但他的表现和魅力实在惹人瞩目，于是我们就地开始商谈新片。”
《木乃伊》及《木乃伊2》的制作人詹姆斯·杰克斯和肖恩·丹尼尔非常希望能与巨石再度合作，两人随即投入《蝎子王》的制作。“巨石的魅力不仅仅体现在大银幕上，片场上的他也极其敬业，”杰克斯说，“肖恩和我都是他的忠实影迷。”
作为《木乃伊》及《木乃伊2》的编导，斯蒂芬·索莫斯同样非常欣赏巨石，而且对蝎子王的角色也情有独衷，继续担纲本片编剧和制作人的他将进一步探索蝎子王的起源。
本片导演查克·拉塞尔曾执导《蒸发密令》和《变相怪杰》，一向热衷于那些巧妙融合机智、动作、爱情和冒险元素的电影，尤其是《侠盗罗宾汉》和《红海盗》之类的经典老片。拉塞尔一直有意拍摄一部古装剑侠片，他希望《蝎子王》不但要展现出扣人心弦的惊险之旅，还要体现出侠义之心和积极精神。
早在巨石客串电视节目《Saturday Night Live》的嘉宾主持时，拉塞尔就看出了他的表演潜力。在本片拍摄过程中，虽然巨石每天都要经受从猛烈沙暴到冲天烈焰的考验，但他从未露出一丝难色，于是，轻松应对苛刻条件的巨石给拉塞尔留下了深刻印象。拉塞尔说：“巨石的动作具有一种优雅的美感，他就像一名出色的重量级拳手。在动作场景中，不管他是在手持利刃或弓箭还是徒手搏斗，你的视线都无法从他身上移开。他用心表演，而且态度极佳。我相信他会让很多人感到惊讶。”
本片化妆设计师杰夫·道恩（Jeff Dawn）曾与动作巨星阿诺·施瓦辛格合作将近20年，他说：“片场上的很多人都会把巨石和阿诺放在一起对比，我同阿诺合作了19部电影，不难发现，两人有很多相似之处。他们都具有职业运动背景，而且粉丝众多。为了塑造出受人欢迎的角色，他们都很勤勉。巨石在表演中有点像阿诺，而且我听说阿诺也非常支持他。”
《蝎子王》中的很多动作场景都漫长而复杂，而且镜头很少会从主角身上切换，于是巨石、迈克·克拉克·邓肯、史蒂文·布兰德、拉尔夫·莫勒、雪莉·霍华德和空手道黑带高手胡凯莉全都尽可能的亲自完成特技动作，以让摄影机近距离拍摄打斗场景。动作戏的精确彩排和拍摄让巨石想起了摔跤赛场，看似即兴发挥，实则精心设计。他说：“我的运动员背景让我很容易完成大银幕上的打斗场景，但仍需特技演员的指点。他们亲切、博学而毫无保留，他们很乐意帮助我修正一些细节。如果稍有差池，我肯定会被送进医院。”
