1992年，维尔霍文在戛纳电影节上首映的作品《本能》备受争议，这也是当年国际影坛上最著名的事件之一。影片表面是在讲述一个变态杀人的惊险侦破故事，而实际上是在描绘一种原始的性欲，一种狂野的激情。这种维尔霍文早期作品中已经成型的结构在影片中得到尽情发挥，影片取得了轰动效应。首映票房即达到1512万美元。在影片拍摄期间，就有众多同性恋者提出抗议，并试图阻止影片拍摄。美国电影协会以片中血腥的暴力镜头、直露的性场面、吸毒场面和粗口将本片定为R级。不过，这个最终上映的版本并非完整的导演剪辑版，该版未能获得美国电影协会的批准，时隔多年，该版本以DVD形式再度出版，销量丝毫不减当年。
《本能》中的核心理念植根于广为人知的弗洛伊德的关于性欲的理论与人类杀戮天性的生物学本能。据此，影片由一个双向的“心理流”建构：即男主角出于类似心理误杀游客，因此确信女主角就是凶手，并冒着也会被女主角在性交高潮时杀死的危险，与被杀者一样双手被绑着与女主角发生性交关系；而女主角被设计成为一个小说家，她的行为与她的小说中的行为形成一种双重结构，她以前的小说又与现在正在写的小说形成一种双重结构；她的公开的类似女杀手似的行为与暗中的不知名的女杀手的行为形成一条平行线，她的所作所为竟然与女杀手如此相象，这样就使影片呈现出多种双重结构对应的关系，充满悬念与戏剧性。以至于首映后观众一直为杀手究竟是谁而争执不休。 [关于导演]
保罗•维尔霍文出生于著名的“性都”阿姆斯特丹，在这个开放的城市中生活对后来维尔霍文的电影风格形成有着不可低估的影响，“性本能”亦成为他影片中的重要议题。1985年，维尔霍文执导了自己的第一部好莱坞作品B级片《血与肉》，开始正式踏上好莱坞的平坦大道。1987年，他执导的成名作品《铁甲威龙》(机械战警)票房喜人，一举奠定了自己成功导演的地位。1989年，他又执导了的由巨星施瓦辛格主演的科幻动作巨片《全面回忆》(宇宙威龙)，被认为是一流水准的娱乐片。从此晋升为好莱坞一流导演之列。1992年他执导了由莎朗·斯通与道格拉斯主演的《本能》，在影坛备受争议，反响轰动，他的导演事业也到达顶峰。随后他执导的影片《艳舞女郎》，较《本能》中的“性本能”有过之而无不及，终于超出美国观众的心理承受范围，受到美国影评界和普通观众的口诛笔伐，影片被定为NC-17级影片，票房惨败。后来的科幻动作片《星河战队》以摆脱“性爱片”的阴影。自《铁甲威龙》中的人体改造加上《本能》中的“人类本能”的混合版《透明人》之后维尔霍文便陷入沉寂。[关于演员]
事实上，《本能》一片在筹拍时，也曾先后邀请过其他的著名女影星，如蜜雪儿·法伊夫、金·贝辛格和吉娜·戴维斯等人担任女主角，但她们都因其中的暴露镜头太多而拒绝出演。唯有莎朗·斯通乐意接受。据说她还曾经刻意地袒胸露臂走过导演面前，以此引起导演注意。最后她终于得到了这个角色，并以其在影片中热烈狂放的性爱表演和大胆的裸露镜头名声大振、家喻户晓。
