十二岁的罗伯特·菲斯克看了《海外特派员》（希区柯克，1940）后，决定他要成为一个外派记者，像电影里乔尔·麦克雷饰演的英雄一样。
菲斯克最终达成他的愿望。如今73岁的他依旧是一位活跃的写作者和战地记者。但是他很早就了解现实并不顺从电影的法则，因此这部电影被称为：这不是一部电影。战争不会因为记者而停止，坏角色也并不总是得到他们应有的惩罚。然而，菲斯克依旧坚守，深信他必须让世界知道这些危险地方究竟发生了什么。他的座右铭：报道你的眼睛所看到的。只有这样你才能更接近真实。
作为一个中东问题专家，菲斯克经常处于战火之中，纪录片中也多有涉及。但是通过以上这些，我们能看到他如何继续不知疲倦地追寻着真相。
