“毕德曼慧星”正朝着地球飞奔而来，给人类致命一击。当局紧急行动，研究出一个最佳方案——由宇航员坦纳（罗伯特·杜瓦尔 Robert Duvall饰）驾驶“弥赛号”飞船飞往慧星，把预先准备好的核弹放置到慧星上面引爆，以令它化成碎片或是改变轨道。坦纳英勇地完成了任务，却发现并没有取得预期效果。慧星碎成了一大一小两部分，向地球步步逼近。
当局迅速采取最后的行动，用“诺亚方舟”计划保住包括人类在内的一些地球物种。这是一个秘密的地下庇护所，只有少数的人可以在这里避开大劫难，等灾难散尽后方重建世界。较小的那部分慧星已经撞向地球，引发山崩地裂，一片世界末日的景象。而跟随其后的大慧星给地球带来的毁灭程度，将远远超乎人们想象，力挽狂澜的人类进入了倒数时刻。

《天地大冲撞》是一部根植于现实的科幻片，因为地球确实曾经遭受过彗星和小行星的反复撞击。为了广泛研究近地小行星和彗星、统计测算出人类在撞击中的死亡机率，美国宇航局的喷气推进实验室和美国空军联手开展了近地小行星跟踪计划（NEAT），研究结果表明，大体积小行星要么会让华盛顿大小的区域毁于一旦，要么会造成灭绝级事件（E.L.E），即物种的大量消亡和全球气候的长期改变，如果它击中海洋，那么海啸足以淹没地球上的大部分陆地。70年代，诺贝尔奖获得者路易斯·阿尔瓦雷兹（Luis Alvarez）和他的儿子沃尔特·阿尔瓦雷兹（Walter Alvarez）公布了一项惊人的发现，那就是他们在形成于6500万年前的古老岩石中发现了分布在世界各地的一层稀有元素，而恐龙等数百个物种正灭绝于同一时期，两人由此推断出地球曾被来自太空的物体击中，该物体也许是一颗彗星，撞击威力相当于数百万枚核弹，形成的陨石坑直径超过100英里，数十亿吨灰尘和水汽被抛入大气层，地球周围随即出现了遮挡阳光数月或数年之久的云团，大多数生物逐渐消亡，只有极少数生物得以幸存下来。现在，很多科学家都相信地球曾经历过多次这种浩劫，虽说数千万或数亿年才可能发生一次，但却完全不可预测。
作为《大白鲨》、《大白鲨2》、《横冲直撞大逃亡》、《大审判》，《茧》和《魔茧续集》的制作人，理查德·D·扎努克和大卫·布朗一直对《天地大冲撞》中人类面对世界末日的故事偏爱有加。编剧迈克尔·托尔金说：“《天地大冲撞》有关全世界对末日的反应，我们聚焦于少数特殊人群的生活，从而将巨大的灾难引入个人层面。”监制琼·布拉德肖说：“不管你是一名年轻的职业女性，还是身担重任的宇航员，或是才刚刚开始领悟的生活的懵懂少年，都要面临一个终极问题，那就是怎样度过灾难前的余生。”在片中扮演职业女性珍妮的蒂娅·里欧妮说：“如果我知道自己只能再活两天，我可能会从楼顶跳下体验飞的感觉，可如果还有两年，你会在这奇怪的期限中做些什么？”
本片导演咪咪·莱德曾凭电视剧《急诊室的故事》两次摘得艾美奖，而本片正是她继《和平缔造者》之后执导的第二部长片。“这个故事之所以会吸引我，”莱德说，“是因为我们在面临灭绝的厄运时必须作出的选择。人们会陷入惊恐、放弃工作和坚守婚姻吗？他们又该怎样拯救他们的孩子？本片不仅有关特效和灾难，还展现出当面临灭顶之灾时我们会做些什么，片中人物作出了多种多样的选择，希望有人能因本片而重新评估自己的人生和选择。”
本片于1997年6月16日开拍，剧组首先在弗吉尼亚州马纳萨斯的一段刚刚完工但尚未开通的高速公路上拍摄了美国东海岸居民疯狂逃离彗星撞击点的混乱场景，有2100名临时演员和1870台各种车辆参与拍摄，整个堵车现场绵延1.5英里。值得一提的是，为协助剧组拍摄，弗吉尼亚的乔治城和阿灵顿史无前例的首次允许在星期天关闭弗朗西斯·斯科特·基大桥，因为两座城市的政府和电影部门给予了大力支持，并提前告知公众大桥的关闭时间，所以拍摄现场井然有序，而蜂拥而至期待报道混乱场面的媒体记者也只好失望而归。
