本片以上世纪六十年代的本地家庭为主轴，通过成员的际遇，带出早期的甘榜生活以及后来的组屋生活，剧情横跨数十年。
电影也将体现新加坡如何从一个以方言为主流语言的社会演变成华语到现今英语的过程，从中回顾流失的方言。它也会融入导演的许多亲身经历，并将安插多首怀旧歌曲。
◎幕后揭秘
导演梁智强认为，50年对一个国家来说不算悠久，甚至可以说，根本就是一个年轻的国家，但是对于世界上绝无仅有的新加坡人来说，50年是漫长的。很多事情，在忙碌和快节奏的生活里，大家正逐一的忘到一干二净。他想透过现在的先进拍摄技术和电脑动画带领大家回到逐渐消失的那些甘榜印象，那些曾经陪伴我们的甘榜（乡村）小路、椰林、蕉叶、小溪萍池还有那些必须要到外面才可以玩的游戏等，在新加坡庆祝50年的当儿，大家可以聚在一起，集体回忆。
