本片是一部关于20世纪50年代至80年代加拿大政府系统性解雇同性恋公务员的电影，这个故事讲述的出发点在希望与一个国家为做正确的事而作的努力。
第二次世界大战后，加拿大和许多西方国家都忙于国家安全，在冷战背景下，加拿大开始调查可能被苏联间谍敲诈的联邦雇员，而同性恋，在当时被认为是一种“性格缺陷”（与酗酒和通奸并称）。由新成立的安全委员会指导，同性恋成为皇家加拿大骑警进行监视和审讯的理由，并受到当时国防部的支持。
在过去的四十年里，加拿大政府使用“水果机”这一有争议的设备，企图取消LGBT员工的公务员资格，使成千上万男性女性的隐私被侵犯，事业被毁。他们受到审问、威胁与操纵。许多人受到心理影响，有些人自杀了。这是加拿大历史上最大的欺凌运动之一。
