◎幕后揭秘
编剧J·D·塞克(J.D.Zeik)创作本片剧本的想法源于对日本无主武士的执迷。片名“Ronin”就是浪人，即无主的流浪武士。幕府时代，武士们誓死保卫着自己的君主，万一君主遭遇不幸，而武士没有尽到自己的职责，那将背负极大的耻辱，他们如同孤魂野鬼一般流浪，靠雇佣为生，再也不能称为武士，只能被叫做“浪人”。15岁时，塞克在看过小说《幕府将军》之后，对其中的无主武士产生了浓厚兴趣。长大成人之后，他一直希望借用浪人的名头和概念构思一个当代故事。多年后，塞克来到了法国尼斯，他看到5名全副武装的警察在阳光下穿过尼斯著名的英国海滨大道(Promenade des Anglais)，深受感染的他决定将故事发生的地点设在尼斯。
导演约翰·弗兰克海默对法国并不陌生，1964年的《战斗列车》就是他在法国拍摄的，随后是1966年的《霹雳神风》和1975年的《法国贩毒网2》。为了拍摄本片，弗兰克海默招募了多位屡次合作过的幕后搭档，其中包括制作设计师迈克尔·Z·哈南(Michael Z.Hanan)、服装设计师梅·罗斯(May Routh)和剪辑师托尼·吉布斯(Tony Gibbs)等等。为本片掌镜的是罗伯特·弗莱斯(Robert Fraisse)，弗兰克海默一直非常钦佩他为让-雅克·阿诺的《情人》拍摄的瑰丽影像。
在影片拍摄期间，制片人小弗兰克·曼古索(Frank Mancuso Jr.)始终在场，与弗兰克海默密切协作。罗伯特·德尼罗回忆说：“小弗兰克·曼古索每天都会出现在片场，仔细观看影片的拍摄过程，作出建议和提供保障，他就像导演的第二双眼睛。”弗兰克海默说：“在通常情况下，我总是试图摆脱制片人，因为他们根本就不会出现在拍摄现场。不过弗兰克与众不同，我喜欢与他合作。”
按照弗兰克海默的设想，影片拍摄的关键部分是用老式的方法完成惊心动魄而又复杂的特技场景，并且不依赖于任何数字特效。这些场景包括汽车在盘山公路上的翻滚、爆炸以及在隧道中的高速追逐和四车道的逆行，这些艰巨的挑战足以让实力雄厚的幕后阵容望而却步。
弗兰克海默说：“在拍摄动作场景时，我们面临着巨大的后勤问题，不过我们的工作人员都很出色，并且巴黎和尼斯的政府部门都很愿意配合我们的拍摄，其中有些地方是很少向电影摄制组开放的，我们得到了特许。”
影片的特技协调人乔·邓恩(Joe Dunne)很清楚本片是一部惊悚片，而不是一部特技电影。汽车特技总监和赛车手让-克劳德·拉格尼兹(Jean-Claude Lagniez)说：“我们有充足的排练时间，我们精细计划出了每个动作和特技场景，最细微的瞬间都不会遗漏。”
弗兰克海默希望影片的主要演员在大多数追车场景中都能亲自上阵，于是他们都要接受特技驾驶训练。乔纳森·普雷斯说：“我们进行了一些高速驾驶定向训练，以深入研究追车场景，可我对那种真正的高速动作毫无心理准备。”不过，在片中扮演迪尔德丽的娜塔莎·麦克艾霍恩却乐此不疲，她说：“和赛车手一起驾车太好玩了，我应该早些开始训练，多做几次，这种免费过瘾的机会太难得了。”
片中还有几段巴黎街头的交火场景，影片技术顾问迈克·古尔德(Mick Gould)负责训练演员使用各种武器和施展游击战术。作为军事行动专家，古尔德还是空手格斗教练、近距离战斗教练和主、被动驾驶教练。为了更好的扮演迪尔德丽，娜塔莎·麦克艾霍恩曾向古尔德请教迪尔德丽的动作风格。她认为迪尔德丽虽然接受过初步训练，但肯定不如山姆，也不及美国军人精干，所以迪尔德丽会出差错，会跌跌撞撞。
为了用简单而现实的手法讲述故事，弗兰克海默还对片中的光线别具匠心，从而让画面影像呈现出浅淡的色调，这在同类动作片中是很少见的。另外，摄影师在拍摄中频繁使用了摄影机稳定架。摄影指导罗伯特·弗莱斯说：“我们可以使用传统的轨道车，但需要花费时间搭建和排演。我们的摄影机稳定架操作员非常能干，画面稳定而且机位天衣无缝，用常规摄影机几乎无法完成。”
片中有很多多人物场景，弗兰克海默要求在同一画框中捕捉距离各异的多个人物，弗莱斯为此使用了装有广角镜头的Super 35mm摄影机。
影片于1997年11月3日在巴黎奥贝维利耶(Aubervilliers)的一家废弃工厂中开拍，因为准备充分，剧组在第一天就拍摄了20多个场景，为随后的拍摄计划形成了轻快和精确的节奏。完成巴黎地铁站的拍摄之后，剧组于11月17日赶往阿尔勒(Arles)，在当地历史悠久的市集广场(Place Du Forum)拍摄时，剧组找来了数百位临时演员。
下一站是尼斯，片中第一场追车场景就是在尼斯老城区的狭窄街道上拍摄完成的，与此同时，剧组还曾赴戛纳等地取景。随后，经过两周的休整，全班人马开始进驻摄影棚拍摄。
