1962年5月，意大利豪华客轮安东尼亚•格拉撒号在行驶到白令海峡附近时，连同船上数百名乘客突然凭空消失，成为近代航海史著名的悬案之一。

与罗伯特·泽米吉斯携手制作HBO热门恐怖剧集《魔界奇谭》和电影《猛鬼屋》及《13猛鬼》的乔·西尔沃认为大海和航海人永远是神秘和魔幻的源泉，而鬼故事也同样经久不衰，不过，还从没有一部电影能将二者融为一体，《幽灵船》恰恰填补了这项空白。西尔沃说：“在《猛鬼屋》中，我们采用了传统的鬼屋，以建筑的全玻璃结构加剧了影片的紧张氛围。在《幽灵船》中，闹鬼的是一艘早在1962年便神秘失踪的大船，一支野心勃勃的海上救援队发现了它，他们不但饱受恐惧的摧残，而且根本无处可逃。《猛鬼屋》、《13猛鬼》和本片中的人物最终都毁于贪婪的欲望，他们诚然是魔鬼的牺牲品，但归根结底，是他们的贪婪招致了厄运。”正如在片中扮演技师道奇的朗·埃达德所说：“他们发现的黄金足以改变他们的生活上百次。在这种境地下，每个人都露出了真面目。”
